Titchfield Abbey founded, shaping the surrounding parish

1232

The foundation of Titchfield Abbey in 1232, as a house of Premonstratensian canons, established the ecclesiastical and economic framework that would govern the lands around what is now Locks Heath for three centuries. The abbey held extensive estates in the area, and the agricultural management of the fields, woodlands and heathland between Titchfield and the Hamble estuary was directed by the monastic economy. The lands that would eventually become Locks Heath were farmed by tenants under the abbey's lordship, and the products of the fields contributed to the sustenance of the monastic community and the local population. The abbey's influence extended beyond agriculture into social and spiritual life, with the canons providing pastoral care to the scattered farming communities across the parish.
