Dissolution of Titchfield Abbey and the creation of Place House
1537
The Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII brought the closure of Titchfield Abbey in 1537 and the transfer of its lands to Thomas Wriothesley, later 1st Earl of Southampton. Wriothesley converted the abbey buildings into a grand Tudor mansion, Place House, and the former monastic estates became a secular country estate. The lands around Locks Heath passed from ecclesiastical to aristocratic management, but the agricultural character of the area continued largely unchanged. The tenants who had farmed under the abbey now farmed under a secular lord, and the fields, hedgerows and lanes of the area reflected centuries of continuous cultivation. Place House became one of the most significant houses in Hampshire, and the Wriothesley family's influence shaped the district for generations.
