Locks Heath Shopping Village developed
c. 1978
The construction of Locks Heath Shopping Village during the late 1970s gave the growing community a commercial centre that reduced its dependence on Fareham for everyday shopping. The shopping village, anchored by a supermarket and surrounded by smaller retail and service units, was designed to serve the expanding residential population and was a key piece of the suburban infrastructure. The car park, the pedestrian walkways and the low-rise retail buildings were typical of the shopping centre design of the era, prioritising convenience and car access over architectural ambition. The Shopping Village quickly became the social and commercial heart of the new community, providing a meeting place and a sense of local identity that the housing estates alone could not create.
